About Our Art Programs

"Arts experiences boost critical thinking, teaching students to take the time to be more careful and thorough in how they observe the world."

A July 2018 study conducted by Education Weekly boasted the above quote and backs up what we at Starkville Academy know to be true about the importance of the Arts in Education. Many studies have shown time and time again that the study of the arts motivates more empathy in students as well as a significant correlation to improved math and language skills. We believe that the Arts are a critical portion of a well-rounded eduction, and by offering art, drama, and music classes at Starkville Academy we are broadening our student's capacities to learn.

The purpose of the Volunteer Band program is to ensure that all students receive the highest level of music education available. Students will become proficient on one or more instruments and will be provided with performance opportunities individually as well as in small and large band ensembles. Students will also become knowledgeable in basic music theory and music history. Participation in the band program will instill in the students a clear understanding of music’s important role in the enrichment of the human spirit as well as its contribution to national and international culture.

The Starkville Academy Elementary Choir is an ensemble open to students in grades 3-6. The Elementary Choir gives these students an opportunity to develop a love for music by performing and singing with their peers at an early age. These young students showcase their talents at the annual Veterans Day Program and at the Christmas and Spring Choir Concerts. The SA Elementary Choir meets once a week under the direction of Ms. Martha Blackwell.

The Starkville Academy Choir is an ensemble comprised of 7th-12th-grade students, who have elected to take Choir as one of their yearly courses. Not only does participating in the SA Choir satisfy the Fine Arts credit required for graduation, but it allows students an opportunity to develop their vocal, team-building, and leadership skills through participation and performance. Students also receive instruction in music theory and music history. Ms. Martha Blackwell is the director.

The Visual Arts Department at Starkville Academy provides students with a progressive curriculum in which high standards are set and critical and creative thinking are stressed. By involving the students intellectually, personally, and emotionally, the knowledge of the content learned assists students in developing life skills. The core integration at each level is prediction, problem solving, aesthetics, art history and criticism. Whether our graduates become creators, performers, or consumers of the arts, the Visual Arts Department seeks to provide the finest preparation in the arts that can be achieved at this educational level.
