2021 NOMINATING COMMITTEE/SLATE OF CANDIDATES
To: The Starkville Academy Patrons

Re: 2021 Nominees for Board of Directors
Date: March 25, 2021
Starkville Academy’s By-Laws provide for the annual selection of two members to the Board of Directors for the school. The candidates for these two positions are determined, first, by a Nominating Committee, which is appointed by, but works independent from, the existing Board, and, second, by requests from Patrons who gather the required number of signatures to be placed on the ballot. Once selected, these two Board members each serve terms of four years.
We were honored to serve as this year’s Nominating Committee. After careful discussion and consideration, we are happy to announce that the committee’s two nominees are Rachel Thomas and Russell Winston. Rachel is the former office manager for Thomas Urology and is now a stay-at-home mom, and she has children currently in the 10th, 9th, 6th, and 4th grades. Russell is the owner of Advanced Collision Repair in Starkville, and he has children in the 8th, 6th, and 4th grades. As we think you will agree, we believe that each of these nominees cares greatly for Starkville Academy and the welfare of our children, and we are confident that each would represent our school in an honest and positive manner.
As noted, the By-Laws provide an opportunity for any Patron desiring to run for the Board to submit his or her name for consideration. To appear on the ballot, a Patron must obtain the signatures of not less than twenty-five Voting Patrons and then submit their request to the school not later than 5:00 pm on April 8th, 2021. Please note that the By-Laws allow only one vote per student family; accordingly, a Patron desiring to appear on the ballot should be certain to obtain signatures from only one person per family. Once the entire number of candidates is known, the school will provide each candidate’s full bio for your review in the weeks ahead prior to the Annual Patrons’ Meeting on Monday, April 19th.
To be elected to the Board, a candidate must be a Patron, must be in good standing with the school, must not be a regular employee of the school, and must not be the spouse of a regular employee of the school. Moreover, no person can serve as a Board Member during any period during which that person’s spouse is serving as a Board Member. For purposes of this requirement, a “regular employee of the school” means any full or part-time teacher, counselor, librarian, administrator, aide, bookkeeper, or secretary, but shall not include any temporary or substitute worker.
The nomination committee would like to express our sincere gratitude to the patrons who submitted names that you thought would make good board members. There were approximately three dozen names submitted for consideration, and we discussed each one at length. Finally, as always, thank you for your support of Starkville Academy.
