Technology & Integration at Starkville Academy

Technology is a tool. It’s a tool that if used effectively, students will become more actively engaged in the learning experience. John Dewey reminds us that, “If we teach today as we taught yesterday, we rob our children of tomorrow.” Therefore, the Technology Department at Starkville Academy is NOT simply about acquiring the latest and best technology that will enable our students to learn better and more than ever before, although we do strive to accomplish that goal. Our more important goal is helping teachers and students learn to integrate the technology into the learning experience so that they become ready to be learners and leaders in a 21st century world. The mission of the Technology Department at Starkville Academy is: “To equip and enable teachers to effectively use technology in the classroom and to enhance and empower the student’s ability to create, collaborate, communicate, and to think critically.”

Starkville Academy currently has the following technologies in place:

  • 3 computer labs of 25 computers each (Windows 8.1)
  • 1:1 program for juniors and seniors (Microsoft Surface Pro 3 tablet)
  • High-speed wireless internet access in each classroom and throughout the campus powered by a C-Spire fiber backbone
  • 2 carts of 25 tablets each available for checkout to all grades and classrooms (Microsoft Surface Pro 3 tablet)
  • 4 computer labs of 4-8 computers each (Windows 8.1)
  • 3D printer and LEGO Robotics (STEM Lab)
  • Mac Lab for Secondary Art Department (Mac OS X)

Starkville Academy Technology Agreement

Student Technology Team

Beginning with the 2016-17 school year, Starkville Academy will launch it’s Student Technology Assistance Team (STAT). STAT will be charged with assisting the Director of Technology & Classroom Integration by helping the faculty and students of Starkville Academy to solve technical issues and challenges so that the technological tool in question can be used to facilitate and advance learning. STAT members must be in at least the 9th grade and are enrolled in the IT Essentials course. This allows them to receive a full Carnegie credit that counts as an elective towards graduation requirements. In addition, STAT members have the opportunity to earn real world Microsoft credentials and present to their peers, faculty, and at regional conferences.
