I believe that Pre-Kindergarten experience allows children a chance to learn to love learning. Pre-Kindergarten emphasizes the whole child: Intellectual, Physical, Social/Emotional and Spiritual development. The activities we engage in are based on these core principles and geared to building self-confidence and independent thinking.
Our day begins each morning with Bible where we focus on bible stories and memory verses. We then have a snack and begin the more academic portion of our day with circle time. During circle time we discuss and learn basic information such as letters, colors and shapes as well as talking about our theme for the week. We then choose from our many learning centers. Each child is permitted to select from Computer, Light Table, Dramatic Play, Science, Library, Art, Puzzles and Games, Blocks and Sensory Table. While the children are engaged in center time, I am able to work on an individual or small group basis to reinforce the concepts for the day. Center time generally lasts one hour and is followed by an hour of outdoor time. We then finish our day with lunch, story, rest time and an additional 30 minutes of center or outdoor play. This schedule allows the children to make independent choices and interact with each other. All activities reflect the current theme and are hands-on activities. At the Pre-Kindergarten age, children learning best from "doing" and are actively involved in their "work" (play).
Most art activities I will choose for the classroom are open ended to
allow for creativity and thought. Many concerns and accomplishments have
been shared through telling a story about an Art picture since children
feel free to state what is on their minds while creating with their
hands. During the week we also have enrichment classes including Music,
Art and Library.
I enjoy teaching this age group because I can help them to develop a joy
for learning and a desire to come to school which will remain with them
through their entire educational career.
