Philosophy

The study of art increases perceptual awareness that is needed in beginning recognition of shapes, letters, and numbers as well as colors.  It can be applied to many subjective areas of study such as math and architecture and many of the sciences as well while a student is climbing the educational ladder.

The Study of art can be intrinsically valuable experience to the student, creating a richer and more varied life for him/her through aesthetic visual experiences.  Cultural value is derived through a study of man’s art works, prehistoric to contemporary.  It opens avenues to past cultures that we would know nothing of were it not for artistic expression.   It provides a common universal language of expression for documenting today’s lifestyles and events.  Through art one can develop an understanding of other nationalities as well as our own.

Of great importance in art education are the significant contributions it makes to the development of the individual.  Creative self-expression of personal experience supports the need of the student to freely express his/her feelings while seeking to state his life’s objectives.  Important aspects in correlating art to life is helping the student find himself/herself and see their selves realistically.

In each project, I incorporate the state, as well as the National Visual Arts Standards.  In doing this, I am trying to set a higher standard for Starkville Academy’s art program/department.

Objectives for Art

To develop the recognition of the worth of aesthetic experience, particularly through visual means.
To inculcate knowledge of and appreciation for the cultural aspects of our own and other societies, both contemporary and historical, in and through visual arts.
To assist in the development of manipulative and perceptual skills, through promoting the use of hands and eyes more efficiently.
To nurture the capacity to effectively solve visual problems.
All these components are combined in one comprehensive package that will help students master the concepts of art.  Our class theme is:  “Creativity Continues”
