Renaissance Learning Workshops:
Best Classroom Practices,
Best Library Practices
The Starkville Academy Library serves students in Pre-K through 6th
grade. With access to over 6200 books, children and faculty are provided
materials to suite a variety of interests and reading levels. Students
are allowed access to the library on a flexible schedule during the
morning hours. At this time, students receive assistance with
/Accelerated Reader/, /a computer learning information system that gives
a computer-assisted assessment of student/ /comprehension of books they
have read/. Students also use this time for special help with class
projects.
In addition to flexible scheduling, children attend a 30-minute weekly
class, where they are instructed in library skills. In addition to
library skills, students learn how to care for books and the library,
and how to check books properly. Children are encouraged to practice
good listening skills during story time. Classes are exposed to the
different literary genres, special authors and illustrators and the
different literary formats. All students are encouraged to read books in
the different literary genres. Popular Children's Book Awards are
discussed and students become familiar with the procedures for selecting
books for special awards. Additional time is spent sharing favorite
books that children want to recommend to their classmates.
*Special class projects are allowed to be displayed in the library so
that students from other grades may benefit from what other classes are
studying. National Library Week and National Children's Book Week are
celebrated with special activities throughout each week.
